Seminar update!

The world has become full of fantastic books, and it is hard to know where to spend your money.  Below, by topic, are listed my favourite books.  They are listed in order of preference.  Some books are extremely expensive, and price has been considered in my ranking.

Monique's Book Preference

AGGRESSION

bullet Cesar Milan - Be A Pack Leader.

This book is absolutely brilliant.  He beautifully captures your part of the human-canine relationship, and where humans error creating issues in our dogs.

bullet Temple Grandin - Animals in Translation.

While I recommend all of her books for people working with animals, this one is of particular interest.  My past was working with autistic children, some extremely aggressive.  These children have taught me a lot of skills for working with aggressive dogs, and have taught me a special way of thinking, one that Temple describes in her book.  This book will help you to also understand your dog better, and to know how he might feel when he is scared and overwhelmed (which almost all dog aggressive dogs are).

bullet Monk's of New Skete- How to Raise a Puppy That You Can Live With

This timeless book offers a monks perspective on how to train a dog. Obviously a monk desires a quite dog, to fit in with their peaceful life, and with their kind and gentle ways, they explain how you can get this.  This book is a must read. Much of the Naughty Dogge Training is modified from the Monks.

BEHAVIOUR MODIFICATION

bullet Martin and Pear - Behaviour Modification - What it is and how to do it.

A human book, which explain the principles so clearly

bullet Murray Sidman - Coersion and Its Fallout

Though at times he over-proves his points, which he really does not need to do, this book is a fantastic and thought provoking book challenging us to rethink how we train our animals.

bullet Terry Ryan - The Toolbox for Retraining The Problem Dog

I am so sad to say that this treasure is out of print.  This is one of my most favourite books for the general public and their dogs.  If you can find a copy second hand, do not hesitate to purchase it.  Her ideas are well thought out, make sense, and on top of that, her work is fun to read.  This book only goes last on my list because of the availability problems

bullet Patricia McConnell - The Other End of The Leash

Patricia is brilliant, period.  Read as much of her as you can, and see her as often as you can!  Her chimp - human comparisons will have you laughing out loud, and hopefully will make you more aware of how you treat your dog.

bullet Pamela Reid - Excel-erated Learning: Explaining How Dogs Learn and How Best to Teach Them

Pamela is a witty writer, who explains the basics of behaviour modification in a way that will not put you to sleep.  She has interesting stories and examples.  If you want to read about beh. mod. and how it applies to dogs, this is the book for you.  What I liked most about Pamela is that she explains all four quadrants of behaviour modification.  It was insightful to read a book from a real dog-person with her own handful of dog issues that she has had to train through (her problem is named Eejit).

COMPETITION OBEDIENCE

bullet Wendy Jago - Schooling with NLP

Definitely the most brilliant animal training book that I have ever read.  She clearly describes how your thoughts, posture and emotional history all effect the current work that you and your animal are doing.

bullet Sylvia Bishop -  Magic to Move you

Her best movie to date. I regularly study this movie, and improve my own handling.  Every time I watch it, I am able to see something new.  If you like training dogs, this is a must have. You can purchase her products from sylviabishopdogtrain.com

bullet Sylvia Bishop - Living with my Dogs (VHS)

This fantastic video is packed with information.  If you get dizzy, this is not the video for you.  For the rest of the dog training world, get it now, watch it weekly, and learn.  I still watch it on a regular basis, and each and every watching teaches me something new.If you have a hard-time finding it, let me know and I will see if I can help you out.  e-mail me

bullet Bobbie Anderson - Building Blocks for the Performance Puppy

While this book contains no earth shattering discoveries, it is a wonderful compilation of all the things that we forget to do when we get our new puppies.  It is a lovely read, it makes sense, and has hundreds of good tips.

bullet Marie Sawford - Ring Ready

An obedience workbook, which is well organized, easy to use, and packed with very clever ideas.  You can order it through Dog Sport magazine.
