If you pick up a starving dog and make him prosperous, he will not bite you. This is the principal difference between a dog and a man. Mark Twain. (1835 - 1910) Sir Bastien Of the Blood (Rescued June 27th 2004) June of 2004 took me to the Blood Reserve outside of Lethbridge, Alberta for university. There I met Sir Bastien, among a pack of about 35 wild dogs who lived on the reserve. What amazed me during my stay was how much these dogs played together, and how wonderful their communication was with each other. Sir Bastien, for any dog, let alone one that was wild, had the most spectacular temperament. His first immediate vet visit announced that he was close to death - his heart beat was over twice the norm, he had rickets, and was literally 15 pounds of worms, bones, and nothing else. Though he was over a year old, he still had his puppy hair, puppy testicles, and growth plates with no growth. He came into my life when I was selling my house, moving to a different province, working full time, and finishing my degree. His timing could not have been worse. But in the words of my dear friend, this was not about me, it was about him. Sir Bastien had one placement that fortunately fell through. He now lives here where he is loved and adored. When his perfect home turns up I will be able to part with him. Until then, he is a 45 pound cherished family member with a shiny black coat, big strong legs and muscles, a full tummy and a very grateful heart.
